Created or born that way?
Today’s topic asks the question; Is a great DJ born that way or created?
Perhaps a mixture of both.
Looking at the lives of Tim and Ernie, the guys who are the DJ’s for Radio Record Hop, you see early on glimpses of how they might come to be mobile DJ’s.
At a young age, they both were very interested in music, with Ernie collecting records in Grade school and Tim starting his own collection sometime in High School. Ernie studied music and took accordion lessons, an instrument he still plays from time to time.
At that same young age they both have a common lacking of being performance. Ernie was in a show as part while in Scouting, as was Tim. Different shows, different roles, but the idea is the same.
As we told you a few days ago, both of them were tinkering with electronics in their youth.
Later, as adults they would both hold Class C Broadcast Licenses.
So, while the ‘born’ part of the equation can be seen, how about created?
It was not like we just went out and bought a couple of turntables and became great DJ’s. Like most everything else short of instant Mashed Potatoes it took time. Our first shows were, well, lets put it this way; we can now look back and have a good chuckle about them. We tried some things that we quickly put aside and decided to never do again and others that we still do today because they work so well, and continue to do so.
We recorded to and listened to our shows, critiquing everything we said and did, finding better ways to introduce ourselves, the music, explain how the ‘Chicken Dance’ is done and so on. We still listen to the shows, still looking for one thing to do better than we did. Continuous improvement is important to us.
We slowly added a few more lights, not too many so we scare anyone away from the floor, but enough so that we can set the mood for most any piece of music.
Everyone referrers to a doctor as a practicing physician, perhaps practicing DJ would apply as well. Something to ponder.
We are Radio Record Hop, a DJ show with over 20 years of two guys working together to bring our clients and their guests the very best in dance music. You can learn more about us at www.radiorecordhop.com
