Two Versus One

Today we are not talking about the latest of the TV battles, instead lets talk about a two DJ show versus a one DJ show.

You best bet is one with two equally talented DJ’s. Matters not how they are paired, but given the choice between hiring one with 1 person who does the show or 2, hire the two person show.

v Odds are better they will show up and play. Cold as that may seem, it’s true. A one-person show has exactly that to rely on in case there is a problem like illness or an accident on the way. By the way, we’ve never missed a show, sprained ankles, sore backs, bad colds, snow, sleet hail and so on has never stopped us! We’ve covered for one another and still put on a great show. One time Tim had laryngitis, so, Ernie did all of the microphone work and Tim was, well at the time spinning records and
v Two heads are better than one. We can’t speak for other shows, but during a dance, we collaborate on much of the music we play and when to play it. Most times one of us will have an idea and pass it by the other person. We’ll toss it around a bit and then we find the perfect song to play.
v The cumulative talent of two is better than the talents of one person. In our case, we both share microphone time equally most of the time. We both have equal engineering skills; such as cueing and starting CD’s. One seem to work magic with the lights and the other is really good at picking music than the other. One is good at getting out in front of the stand and leading games or things like the Chicken Dance, the other works well from the microphone at driving the crowd on with things like shouting “Yeah, Yeah!” during Mony Mony. Between the two of us we do a, dare we say it, great job of making every dance we play for fun. One person just can’t work like that.
v The most for your money. Being ‘On Stage” for four hours is a lot of effort and sometimes tiring. With two DJ’s, at least in our case, we play non-stop all event long. Unless you’d like us to take a break while you do something like serve desert or the like, we keep the music rolling along. One of may take a short break, leaving for part of a song or so, but most of the time we are both there. Either way we make sure that CD’s are pulled out and ready to play, and everything is perfectly ready before one of us walks away. If you have one person playing, they may need a break or to leave the stand for a while. It’s understandable, DJ’s are human.

We have played our music and used our lights as a one person show, playing for friends at a party. The result; it makes playing as two people even sweeter. It’s so much better having two people paying attention to what type of music is working or not and suggesting adjustments. It helps having someone to bounce ideas off of and work to make every dance a success.

Plus we have been working together a long time. 21 years. We know the moves of one another. We know when each other tends to stop speaking and it’s our turn just by the subtle tone change in the person’s voice; something that the casual listener would not hear.

We’ll write about working together for that length of time in a future blog entry.
